VAL’s Progress: The Automatic Validation Tool for PDDL2.1 used in The International Planning Competition
نویسندگان
چکیده
A key element in the success of the 3rd International Planning Competition was the implementation of an automatic plan validator for PDDL2.1 , VAL. Over 5000 plans were generated by entrants, so it was clearly essential for evaluation of the results alone. VAL was a vital tool in the development process of competitors to develop their planners. This document describes the evolution of VAL to handle more complex types of plans for competitions of the future. In the 3rd IPC the handling of numeric resources was limited in that the values could only be updated discretely. We report on the progress made with extending VAL so that numeric resources can be updated continuously. Also a new reporting option in LTEX has been implemented including a Gantt chart and graphs of the numerical resources – this greatly increases the usefulness of VAL as a tool for the development of planners using PDDL2.1.

Validating Plans with Continuous Effects
A critical element in the use of PDDL2.1, the modelling language developed for the International Planning Competition series, has been the common understanding of the semantics of the language. The fact that this has been implemented in plan validation software was vital to the progress of the competition. However, the validation of plans using actions with continuous effects presents new chall...
متن کاملPDDL2.1: An Extension to PDDL for Expressing Temporal Planning Domains
In recent years research in the planning community has moved increasingly towards application of planners to realistic problems involving both time and many types of resources. For example, interest in planning demonstrated by the space research community has inspired work in observation scheduling, planetary rover exploration and spacecraft control domains. Other temporal and resource-intensiv...
متن کاملPlan Validation and Mixed-Initiative Planning in Space Operations
This paper describes our experiences in using our plan validation tool, VAL, in the development of a mixed-initiative plan construction tool intended to support space operations planning. VAL was initially developed to support the 3rd International Planning Competition (IPC), but has subsequently been extended in order to exploit its capabilities in plan validation and development. In particula...
متن کاملAn Investigation into the Expressive Power of PDDL2.1
The planning domain language PDDL2.1, used in the 3rd International Planning Competition, has sparked off some controversy in the planning community as researchers consider its expressive power and the ease with which interesting domain models can be constructed in the language. In this paper we show that the expressive power of PDDL2.1 is much greater than is commonly believed. We demonstrate ...
متن کاملPDDL+ : Modelling Continuous Time-dependent Effects
The adoption of a common formalism for describing planning domains fosters far greater reuse of research and allows more direct comparison of systems and approaches, and therefore supports faster progress in the field. A common formalism is a compromise between expressive power (in which development is strongly driven by potential applications) and the progress of basic research (which encourag...
